Participatory monitoring of wildlife

Participatory monitoring of wildlife

This project is a collaboration between Puelo Patagonia, the Cochamó Andean Club and the Cochamó Valley Organization, focused on strengthening local capacities and conserving the rich biodiversity of the area.

This monitoring program goes beyond simply collecting scientific data. It fosters a deeper connection between the community and its natural environment, actively involving residents in the conservation of their natural heritage. Through their participation, local inhabitants are empowered and gain deeper knowledge about biodiversity and the dynamics of local ecosystems.

In an initiative to record and monitor wildlife, 25 camera traps have been installed at strategic points in the valley. This effort pays special attention to the Patagonian Vizcacha.

Community participation and local knowledge

Local community members have played a crucial role in the installation and maintenance of this monitoring system. Their knowledge of the terrain and fauna has been fundamental to the success of the project. Participants received prior training on camera handling and the selection of optimal sites to capture a wide range of species, including invasive ones.

Long-term preservation

The project not only seeks to better understand the fauna of the Cochamó Valley, but also to identify potential threats to its conservation. The data collected is key to developing effective management and conservation strategies. The project also seeks to strengthen alliances between local organizations to support conservation and promote responsible tourism in the Sanctuary.
