OCHAMÓ: A NATURAL GEM IN NORTHERN PATAGONIA, CHILE.

Located in the Los Lagos Region, deep in the Andes Mountains, this municipality is renowned for its unique gaucho muleteer culture and breathtaking landscapes—featuring ancient forests, crystal-clear rivers, endemic wildlife, and towering granite walls that attract tourists and adventurers from around the world.

COMMUNE OF COCHAMÓ

Although the municipality was officially established on September 21, 1979, its history dates back centuries. From the first settlements along the Reloncaví Estuary by pre-Hispanic peoples to the arrival of

settlers from the Chonos Archipelago and the Chiloé Islands in the 18th century, to the Argentine immigrants who populated the mountains in the 19th century, Cochamó has been shaped by its people—brave and resilient individuals who have thrived in this remote corner of southern Chile.

- Economic Activities: Agriculture, small-scale livestock farming, and nature-based tourism.

Puelo Patagonia NGO has been working for over 11 years to conserve the natural and cultural heritage of the Puelo and Cochamó watersheds. Protecting this place means ensuring the continuity of unique ecosystems, which are essential not only for local flora and fauna but also for the communities that have lived in harmony with nature for generations. By preserving this territory, we are investing in a future where nature-based tourism, sustainable agriculture, and traditional ways of life can coexist with environmental conservation, benefiting both people and the planet. 

The first settlement of the municipality, serving as the gateway to the Cochamó Valley and the Reloncaví Estuary.
